About us
Our Story
A New Haven community of faith since 1961, now at home on Dixwell Avenue in Hamden.
Our Mission
To serve as a welcoming Islamic center that nurtures spiritual growth, education and good character, guided by the Holy Qur’an and the example of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and to contribute positively to Hamden, New Haven and the wider community.
Our Vision
A masjid where people of all backgrounds come together to worship, learn and serve; where children are raised with knowledge and confidence; and where the community is a source of strength for its neighbors.
History
From Temple #40 to Dixwell Avenue
Our community began in 1961 as New Haven’s Temple #40 on Dixwell Avenue. In 1968, Abdul-Majid Karim Hasan became its leader, and through the years he guided the community on its journey.
In 1975, under the leadership of Imam W. Deen Mohammed, the community moved from the teachings of the former Nation of Islam to the universal teachings of the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, a transition that brought many thousands of Americans into mainstream Islam.
The congregation, then known as the Muhammad Islamic Center, gathered for many years on Carmel Street in New Haven before moving to its current home at 870 Dixwell Avenue in 1997. The masjid was later renamed the Abdul-Majid Karim Hasan Islamic Center in honor of its founding imam.
Our founder
Imam Dr. Abdul-Majid Karim Hasan
Imam Hasan served the New Haven and Hamden Muslim community for about fifty years. A student of Imam W. Deen Mohammed, he was assigned by the Imam to lead the community and devoted his life to education, chaplaincy and service.
- The first Muslim chaplain in the Connecticut Department of Correction (1975)
- Director of Education for the Clara Muhammad School
- Author of Reflections on the Islamic Teachings of Imam W. Deen Mohammed
- A respected voice for peace and interfaith understanding in Greater New Haven
Imam Hasan returned to his Lord in November 2019 at the age of 83. We pray that Allah accepts his service and grants him the highest place in Paradise. The masjid that bears his name continues his work.
Our community
In the community of Imam W. Deen Mohammed
Imam Warith Deen Mohammed (1933–2008) led the largest community of American Muslims into the universal practice of Islam. He taught that faith, education, family and good citizenship go together, and that Al-Islam and American life are not in conflict.
